Building Systems & Technical Principles II

Part of curriculum: Part 3 Energy Modeller

Building Science Principles
Materials and Equipment

Looking behind the curtain. This interactive 1-day course shifts your modelling focus from the building shell to the complex mechanical systems driving real-world performance. By mastering the “Systems Lens,” participants will move past static data entry to accurately simulate active fluid loops, ventilation loads, and secondary equipment controls. From constructing custom hourly hot water profiles to mapping out the non-linear interactive effects of bundled energy conservation measures, you will learn to build models that behave like real buildings. Grounded in NECB 2020 compliance metrics and ASHRAE standards (62.1 and 55), this course delivers the technical foundation needed to move your simulations from a standard baseline to a fully optimized mechanical design.

Learning Outcomes

  • Categorize diverse SWH system archetypes and construct functional hourly load profiles using NECB 2020 operating schedules and peak loads to execute compliant baseline simulations according to Part 8 criteria.
  • Assess the operational roles of auxiliary HVAC equipment—including fans, pumps, coils, and VAV terminal units—and explore energy-efficient control strategies to optimize fan and pump fluid-loop efficiencies within compliance models.
  • Calculate ventilation rates for diverse building archetypes using ASHRAE Standard 62.1 protocols and accurately simulate the corresponding ventilation load impacts on total annual building energy performance.
  • Simulate and isolate the performance of multiple parametric ECMs and compare them against a bundled package to analyze cross-system interactive effects using NECB 2020 baseline models.
