Overview

The Part 3 Energy Modeller program trains practitioners to build, analyze, and report compliance energy models for commercial and institutional (Part 3) buildings in Nova Scotia under the NECB 2020. It develops intermediate-level skill: a graduate can model a Part 3 building from start to finish, demonstrate performance-path compliance with the NECB, evaluate the energy and cost impact of upgrade measures, and communicate results in industry-standard formats. The program responds to Nova Scotia's adoption of the NBC 2020 and NECB 2020 (effective April 1, 2025) and the province's tiered energy codes targeting net-zero-ready construction by 2030. Commercial Part 3 modelling is the primary focus; one targeted module extends into NBC 9.36 compliance for modellers who also take on low-rise (Part 9) residential work.

Curriculum Outcomes

  • Construct and validate a code-compliant energy simulation for Part 3 or Part 9 structures by interpreting prescriptive requirements of NECB Part 8/NBC 9.36 to execute a Performance Path submission.
  • Identify and define energy-saving upgrade scenarios in at least 3 different building systems, analyze energy savings, and use Net Present Value (NPV) to evaluate long-term financial viability.
  • Prepare Energy Model Report and compliance documentation associated with permitting requirements from application through to occupancy.
  • Use professional and appropriate communication strategies to work effectively with project stakeholders including owners, designers, contractors, and building officials.

Modules (7)

  1. M1
Building Systems & Technical Principles I
Stop guessing and start simulating. This intensive 2-day course transforms energy modelling from a compliance hurdle into a high-performance design tool. By mastering the 'Modeller's Lens,' participants will move beyond simple data entry to become a System Translator—calculating the real-world physics of the envelope, syncing complex MEP systems, and using parametric 'Simple Box' models to predict the ripple effects of every design choice. Grounded in NECB 2020 rigour and the 'Big Three' metrics (EUI, TEDI, GHGI), this course provides the technical mastery needed to move projects from 'Code Legal' to 'Future Proof.'
Building Codes and RegulationsBuilding System Principles (HVAC, Lighting, DHW)Materials and Equipment
  2. M2
The National Energy Code of Canada for Buildings (NECB) and Related Procedures
A one-day workshop covering the NECB, aimed at new and aspiring energy modelling professionals: building on a foundational familiarity with the NECB, this module provides practical guidance in the interpretation of NECB requirements for the development of energy models for performance path compliance. Learners will work through NECB requirements and procedures in applied, scenario-based exercises to develop working knowledge of code provisions, compliance processes, and regulatory structures.
Building Codes and RegulationsReporting and Communication
  3. M3
2020 NBC 9.36 Compliance for Part 3 Modellers
This half-day module addresses 2020 NBC §9.36 compliance for Part 3 energy modellers who need or want to take on Part 9 (low-rise residential) work. The module assumes you can already model a building — its focus is on what §9.36 requires you to model, table by table, that NECB does not. It covers the Nova Scotia compliance routes available under §9.36: the performance path (§9.36.5) with its tier targets (§9.36.7), and the Nova Scotia–adopted Energy Conservation Points (ECP) prescriptive path (§9.36.8). Throughout, the emphasis is on reading and applying the code as written — its rules, prescriptive tables, building-type quirks, and required values — rather than on modelling technique, which M5 carries. Practitioners moving into Part 9 typically have the modelling skill but lack the §9.36 code knowledge; this module fills exactly that gap so they can produce defensible Part 9 compliance results.

  4. M4
Building Systems & Technical Principles II
Looking behind the curtain. This interactive 1-day course shifts your modelling focus from the building shell to the complex mechanical systems driving real-world performance. By mastering the “Systems Lens,” participants will move past static data entry to accurately simulate active fluid loops, ventilation loads, and secondary equipment controls. From constructing custom hourly hot water profiles to mapping out the non-linear interactive effects of bundled energy conservation measures, you will learn to build models that behave like real buildings. Grounded in NECB 2020 compliance metrics and ASHRAE standards (62.1 and 55), this course delivers the technical foundation needed to move your simulations from a standard baseline to a fully optimized mechanical design.

  5. M5
    Introduction to Compliance Energy Modelling
A one-day workshop followed by approximately 20 hours of self-paced virtual learning, covering energy modelling fundamentals for new practitioners. Building on foundational knowledge of building systems and technical principles, this module introduces energy modelling software and approaches through hands-on learning. Learners will practice using modelling software and develop complete NECB-compliant energy models, based on sample project design documentation and energy saving upgrade scenarios.
    Energy Modelling Software
  6. M6
    Analysis & Reporting
A one-day workshop covering complementary analyses and project communications. Expanding on knowledge of code requirements, energy modelling software, building systems and energy upgrades, this module explores integrated design, detailed financial analysis, and preparation of project deliverables. Learners will practice applying integrated design principles, modelling capital and operational costs, and developing industry-standard reports and presentations.
    Energy-Saving UpgradesReporting and Communication
  7. M7
    Capstone Project
The capstone is the program's culminating module: a single, real compliance-modelling project carried out from start to finish. Working from sample plans and design documentation for a basic building, learners prepare a complete NECB performance-path compliance model, evaluate energy-saving upgrade opportunities, and communicate their results to a client audience. It is a hands-on, self-directed project that integrates and applies the knowledge and skills developed across Modules 1–6.
